Announcing “Exowatt Explains”: Tackling the Biggest Myths in Energy

That is why we are thrilled to announce our new video series: Exowatt Explains.

In this series, we will be breaking down the complex math, physics, and economics of the global energy grid, tackling the industry’s biggest questions head-on.

Episode 1: The Great Solar Land Myth

For our premiere episode, our CEO and Co-Founder Hannan tackles one of the most widely repeated arguments against renewable energy: “We need to cover the entire country in solar panels to power America.”

It sounds intuitive. Replacing the entire U.S. grid with solar must require a staggering, impossible amount of land, right?

Not exactly. We ran the numbers, accounting for cloudy days, rain, nighttime, and the necessary spacing for rows, access roads, and transmission lines.

Here is the reality of the math:

  • U.S. Power Need: The U.S. uses about 4,000 terawatt-hours of electricity per year, meaning we need roughly 500 gigawatts of continuous power.
  • The Land Requirement: To generate and firm that power 24/7, we would need roughly 10,000 square miles of land. That is a square measuring just 100 miles on each side.
  • The Total Footprint: 10,000 square miles represents less than 0.3% of the total land area of the United States.

Putting “A Lot of Land” Into Perspective

When you compare the solar land requirement to how we already utilize land in the U.S., the argument completely falls apart.

  • Golf Courses: 3,500 square miles (a third of the required solar land)
  • Parking Lots: 50,000 square miles (5x the required solar land)
  • Lawns and Turf: 70,000 square miles (7x the required solar land)
  • Corn for Ethanol: 140,000 square miles (14x the required solar land)

If we wanted to power the entire planet—every home, factory, and country—we could do it by covering just half of the state of New Mexico in solar panels.

The Real Problem: Dispatch, Not Land

If land isn’t the issue, why isn’t the whole country running on solar yet?

Because the skeptics are right about one thing: the sun doesn’t shine at night. Modern infrastructure requires reliable, 24/7 power. You cannot run a hospital, a factory, or a massive AI data center on intermittent power, and traditional 4-hour battery backups simply aren’t enough to bridge the gap.

We don’t have a land problem. We have a dispatch problem.
